Ayurvedic Dosha – The Indian Way Of Knowing Your Belly

Contributed by Rosemarie Layne

This perspective is a great way to get to know and accept your belly and body, and to realize that each type is beautiful. Every belly has its own appeal, and each dosha type dances through life in her own style. For example, a pitta type might want to show off her muscular belly with clothes that bare the midriff, while kapha types might favor plunging necklines to make the most of their cleavage. But I’m getting ahead of myself. What follows are short summaries of the doshas:

Vata types are governed by sound and touch. They’re naturally slim and not muscular, with slender hips and narrow, downward-sloping shoulders. They may be either taller or shorter than average and live a rather active life. So, if you’re made up mostly of vata, you’ll be naturally thin and probably have a flat or even concave belly – think fashion model. But watch out!

When vata types gain weight, most of it hangs out around their waists, and they can easily grow a little pooch, even when the rest of them looks thin.
Vatas also tend to get bloated, which makes their bellies puff out, but it’s usually due to digestive problems, not fat. Middle-eastern music fascinates vatas because of the intricate rhythms and instruments. Their physical movements can be fast, intense, and very exciting.

Pitta types are visually oriented and have a medium frame along with moderately developed muscles, including their belly muscles. Physically, their movements have strength and endurance, and they move with determination – think tennis champion.

So if you’re mostly pitta, and you eat too much and aren’t physically active, your belly will grow along with the rest of you, but it will probably be in proportion. Pittas also enjoy belly dance because of the beautiful, glitzy costumes.

Kapha types respond to taste and smell. They’re the voluptuous ones, with heavy bones, broad shoulders, and wide hips. They can be quite tall and tend to be born to lounge. If you’re mostly kapha, most of your fat will be located around your hips and thighs – think earth goddess. You can have a perfectly flat belly or a nice round one, but this is more than balanced by your bottom!

Kaphas gain weight most easily and may find it difficult to lose. Physically, their movements may be slow, steady, methodical, and quite graceful. They especially love belly dance because the feminine movements emphasize their curves.

Complementary Health Day

The entire family can experience complementary health treatments at their best when the Barbados Reiki Association holds its annual Complementary Health Day Sunday, June 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Ursuline Convent School Hall.

As usual, the focus will be on energy healing, with Reiki, DNA activations, Quantum touch, acupuncture, reflexology and different types of massage therapy all playing starring roles. A number of health practitioners will be on hand to share their expertise, while demonstrations in T’ai Chi, Qi Gong and Oriental dance will take place at various points throughout the day.

Botanical and Feng shui material and wholesome snacks will also form part of the day’s offerings.

Acting President Kathleen Hurley explains that the event, which has been running for a number of years, has grown to from strength to strength.

“More and more people are becoming interested because they are seeing the benefits of Reiki and other complementary modalities and are taking responsibility for their own health. They are taking courses to treat themselves and their families, and maintain optimal health.

“I’ve also noticed that some members of the medical profession have become more accepting of Reiki … (and) we are really looking forward to the day when we can work side by side with more of the medical community.”

For further information, contact Kathleen Hurley at 428-4186 or 426-5071 or Michael Rudder at 435-2506.

Reiki Healing and Attunements

Reiki Healing and Attunements
By Steven Britain

I have now been a Reiki Master for about 6 years and have taught and attuned a number of aspiring healers who feel the need to give of themselves and to experience the joy and wonder Reiki provides.

Anybody can learn to be a Reiki Healer. We all have the ability within us, which at one point of human development long ago, was a natural skill. Over the millenia we have forgotten our true selves and have become obsessed with money and materialism. In turn we humans have walked a different path….Just look at the cruelty and disrespect for life we have today all around us, yet we seem to take a lot of that for granted.

The experience of a Reiki Healing is usually a deep feeling of relaxation, protection, safety and comfort. In this context, the word Healing has a somewhat different meaning from the normal meaning. The widely accepted meaning for healing seems to be curing of symptoms, for that is what medical doctors and the like look to do in their practice. The other meaning for healing, used in the practice of Reiki, as well as other related areas, is the return of mind, body and spirit to greater wholeness. There is an ideal form each of us has, this ideal form being the highest and clearest expression of who we are. Pain or disease comes from any deviation between the persons current form in the three dimensional, physical world and this ideal form.

The Universe is abundant and provides all our needs, if we could just trust in it..The wondrous touch of Reiki and similar healing arts reminds us that we do not have to be attached to money and materialism….It never occurs to the Reiki Healer that his healing will fail, thus she invokes the Law of Attraction within this healing art and more importantly her entire life.

The true master is detached. She is independent of status, finance or emotional need. He is free and immensely powerful. Attachment is conditional love…. A Master loves unconditionally and thus does not form cords of attachment….Reiki is a natural process within this concept.
